"In trying to express clearly the object of the studies‥published during the last few years, I found no word exactly suitable. Hence, I coined the word ‘Palæopathology’. Palæontology is defined as ‘the science of extinct forms of life’; by palæopathology I do not mean the science of extinct diseases, but the science of the diseases which can be demonstrated in human and animal remains of ancient times" (OED).
